But for authors, producing a professional ebook is often far more complicated than clicking “Export.” To compete, authors upload their manuscripts expecting a polished ebook. The Nightmare of Automated Converters
Unfortunately, ebook software only works as well as the document you give it. Beautiful digital typography requires clean styling and technical validation, not automated file conversion shortcuts. Your ebook isn’t a PDF in another format. It’s an entirely different product, rebuilt from the ground up. Automated tools must translate your manuscript into the language e-readers understand for it to interpret the book’s layout the way you intend. If the original document isn’t organized correctly, pieces will break during conversion.
The Difference Between Formatting and Styles
Inline formatting applies styling directly to individual words or paragraphs rather than using a consistent document-wide style. For example, when you highlight a word, then use the “bold” function in the toolbar, that’s inline styling. Excessive direct formatting makes it harder for the ebook to adapt cleanly across different devices and reader preferences.
Style panels keep all of your formatting rules in one place. Instead of manually formatting every chapter title, heading, or paragraph, you define each style once and apply it throughout the document. That creates cleaner code and allows your ebook to adapt correctly across multiple devices.
Additionally, improper heading hierarchies will break e-readers’ internal navigation menu because most e-readers only support two levels of navigation headings. If you use more, utilize the paragraph styles menu to format them. Otherwise, the automated conversion software will become confused, causing the device to skip chapters, flatten the layout, or fail.
Broken Navigation and the Invisible Table of Contents (TOC)
Formatting isn’t the only thing automated converters struggle with. Navigation is another common failure point. If a reader cannot navigate your book instantly, retail platforms may flag the file for quality issues. It is important to have both a physical page-based TOC and a hidden navigation menu built into every ebook reader.
The physical TOC is a dedicated page located at the front of your book, after the front matter. It looks the same as in the printed version of the book. The difference is that chapter names on this page are clickable hyperlinks. A reader can use this page to jump to any chapter they wish, but once they do, the reader will have to go back to the TOC to repeat this function.
A logical TOC runs in the background. It generates a “Table of Contents” dropdown menu built into the digital reader’s software. Because it is tied directly to the device’s operating system, a human reader can access it at any time from any page of the book. This allows people to do things like check how many pages they have left in the current chapter or skip between sections without losing their place.
Image Disasters and Reflowable Text Realities
Images require special handling during EPUB conversion. If they aren’t anchored correctly, they can jump to unexpected locations or disappear entirely. Likewise, linking to an image stored on your computer or an external website will cause it to break for readers. All images should also be compressed to web–friendly sizes before export, as e-readers have strict maximum file size caps for EPUB. Proper image placement and compression ensure graphics display consistently across devices.
Unlike a printed book, an ebook has to adapt to hundreds of different screen sizes. That’s why the text needs to flow naturally, whether someone is reading on a Kindle, tablet, or phone. Text should wrap to the next line seamlessly. On a traditional website, the browser allows you to swipe left and right to see elements that are wider than the screen. EPUB engines do not allow horizontal scrolling. Fixing dimensions requires an EPUB style-sheet using flexible sizing units (% or em) instead of pixels (px). Knowing how to do this will keep your text from breaking in odd places.
